As most the people I know, my family I will be making the trek to the movies this weekend at some time and watching "Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire". *However we are all having to draw straws about who will sit by my daughter, Kassi, due to her pointing out inconsistices between the book and the movies during the movie and for some reason this drives my other two daughters NUTS!!!* We are also going to be taking in "Walk the Line". We have also started making plans for "The Chronicles of Narnia" and "King Kong". Meanwhile, my mom who never goes to the movies is excited about seeing "Rent". And since I'm an only child, I have been chosen by my dad to attend this movie with mom.
Is there any holiday movie that anyone is looking fwd to seeing? Any fear that the translation between book and movie will fall short of expectations?

Well we are seeing HPatGoF (Hip at Golf?) today as soon as Maddie gets out of school. We are also excited about Narnia and Kong, but not as much as the new Potter film. I am hoping against hope that Aeon Flux will be good--ah the Liquid TV days of college. But I am most looking forward to Match Point, Woody Allen's new film. It has good buzz.

In addition to Goblet of Fire, Narnia, and Match Point, one of the movies I am most looking forward to this December is Memoirs of a Geisha. Bridget loaned me the book while I was at home on maternity leave last summer (she's a sweetheart like that). I loved it, I lurved it, I luffed it (with two ff's). They've assembled a fantastic cast. Very excited about its release.
I am curious about the new Pride & Prejudice since 'they' are saying it is better than the definitive P&P starring Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle. I'll have to see it to believe it.
As for movies coming to video/DVD this December, I'm pretty dang excited about the release of 2046, the loose sequel to Wong Kar-Wai's In the Mood for Love

I am skeptical that A&E's P&P (with Firth and Ehle) will ever be bested. It is so clear and honest, with consistently well-drawn characters, from Mr. Collins and Mr. Bennet to the leads. Nice pacing. Etc... Just wonderful through and through, in my view. I guess my greatest worry would be how anyone could even compete with Firth's Darcy. But I am optimistic and would like to see the new version.
(Aside: I have a problem with pretty/handsome people in movies. I prefer to see more ordinary looking folk. Keira Knightley is too pretty for this role. Whoever she tries to pretend she is, her looks must be taken into account just like other physical properties like age and build. If a casting director doesn’t do this, then the casting gets in the way of the audience’s ability to suspend disbelief. In this role it will be hard to believe that Knightley’s Elizabeth could have a better looking older sister and that even very rich gents wouldn't be tripping over themselves to propose. I think it was a poor casting decision, something like casting Hervé Villechaize as Conan the Barbarian.
I feel the same way about pretty guys. For example, Orlando Bloom as a pirate or a crusader is laughable on its face. Cast him as an elf or a rock star.)

I had forgotten about "Match Point" and "Brokeback Mountain". These are also on my lists. I want to see "Memoirs of a Geisha" but since my hubby has already done his infamous sneer when I made that statement, I have a feeling I will be waiting for DVD and a day off to be able to see it. However, P&P has not made my list. I still want to see Firth's and have been begging the local video store to please buy it so I may have the opportunity to see it. *I'm pathetic...15 lashes of a wet noodle for being so far behind in viewing this work*. And, Jeff, I'm sure there were some hot pirates back in the day...okay, maybe not as attractive as Orlando or Johnny Depp...but hot nonetheless...

Lonnie, I’m not so sure. You hear of buggery in prisons, monasteries, and major league baseball….but on pirate ships? At least I’ve never heard it. Maybe it was bad luck or because they washed their clothes in urine. Scurvy isn’t exactly attractive, you know ( www.bigdeadplace.com/scurvyawareness.html ). ;D

Hmmm...yea...buggery on a pirate ship...I haven't heard of any either...but most of the stories I've ever been told is when pirates would sweep into a port...they would grab the nearest woman *or semblance to a female...* and have his way with her...*ummm...that sounds awfully old fashioned*...thus relieving the need for buggery...

BTW, how did holiday movies transgress into a discussion of pirates' private lives???...of course, it does seem to be a logical course of thought...

Christmas and gay piracy. oops. Sorry Lonnie. Didn't mean to hijack your thread.
Back to the topic at hand, do you think there will be any buggery in Match Point?
PS Sorry about that. For those of you who don't know, I generally get toasty on Friday afternoons after my classes are finished. If Justin were online, I'd just chat with him. (He's used to it.) Since he's not I am sharing my stupid sense of humor with the whole board.
PPS That was a great link Chris. But I have a question: "...it took an hour for Barnet's entire crew to subdue the two women." Whatever does that mean? It's that word "entire" that bothers me...

Hey that's that gay cowboy movie right? How does the song go: Cowboys are frequently secretly fond of each other...

Ummm...yep...two HOT cowboys pining for each other...and I went and looked up the lyrics to the song you mentioned...too funny...
Do you think Pirates of the Caribbean 2 will address the buggery issue?...

Some how I doubt it. Orlando already played a Trojan and neither them nor the Greeks so much as mentioned the issue. A shame, too, since from the Greek point of view a man who wasn't sexaully attracted to younger men was downright strange. Not to be trusted. Lacking in proper aesthetic sense.
