I never watched Stone's Alexander. Maybe I shouldn't.
(Another aside—I am hijacking this thread over and over again—I have a carefully constructed picture of Socrates in my mind. In my intro classes I teach about 1 month just on Socrates. But his homosexuality is not a significant part of that picture. I've never been able to decide if that is a problem or not. On one hand what does it really matter? On the other is there anything more important finally than who and what we love? If I am committed to philosophy being more than a mental exercise (I am), then don't I have to fit the homosexuality into the picture in some meaningful way? Of course I mention it...in passing. A nod. Nothing more. But it must have meant something. What does it mean? And am I hopeless moralist to look for meaning?)

Did his homosexuality impact what he taught? Was part of his philosophy based on his sexuality? And why am I pondering this question with you? Does this mean I don't want to finish the paperwork laying on my desk? Am I only counting the hours til I get to play poker tonight at the home game?
PS PLEASE DO NOT WATCH ALEXANDER...I had to remove movies from my ten most hated list to make room for the horrible 3 hrs wasted piece of shit.

Oliver Stone's "Alexander" is the only movie about that period of time that showed the use of psiloi in battle. That right there made the movie for me, despite it's horrible pacing and wooden characters. Psiloi.

As for seeing holiday movies, you saw Tyler's movie list. So far I am on course to see all of them.

Hey there are two other films I want to see this holiday season that I just heard about: 1. “The White Countess” As Justin said elsewhere, Ralph Fiennes, the lead, can almost do no wrong. (I say almost because he did star in a stinker with the ridiculously overrated Jennifer Lopez.) But the real reason to see this one is because it is the last Merchant/Ivory film. Ever. Ismail Merchant died. www.sonypictures.com/classics/whitecountess/2. “The New World” Terrence Malick directs. Nuff said. www.thenewworldmovie.com/

2. “The New World” Terrence Malick directs. Nuff said. Well, maybe not quite 'nuff said. The actor who plays Pocahontas is HOT. Actually, she's a cousin of the singer Jewel. The movie also stars Irene Bedard (she had the role of Pocahontas--voice and image--back in the '90s), and she's not exactly shabby lookin'... And for those attracted to the manly form, this movie's got Collin Farrell, Christian Bale, and Ben Chaplin. Oh, yeah, and Terrance Malick is awesome.

Well, I did get to see both HP and Walk the Line this past weekend. I was quite impressed with Walk the Line. I had high expectations and was happy that they were met. *if any of you get a chance to see it...please do...so worth the money and the time* This Wednesday, a friend of mine and I are going to try and go see The Ice Harvest though I worry I will be quite disappointed by it...I love love love John Cusack *have since Sixteen Candles even with the crazy head gear he wore...but after Must Love Dogs and Serendipty...I do worry*...and my friend absolutely thinks Billy Bob can do no wrong...so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I won't hate it...

After Gross Point Blank and High Fidelity, I'd watch Cusak poop in a Volkswagen on a weekly basis, just 'cause I think I owe him.

To be honest, Tyler, I kinda felt like I was watching John Cusack taking a dump when I saw Must Love Dogs...but yea...after HF and GPB...I still continue to see everything that he puts out there...

The word is out on Aeon Flux: Aeon Sux. rottentomatoes.com rated it rotten with a paltry 11% on the tomatometer, which means that it's one of the worst movies of the year.

I was a'feared of that. I'd really rather rewatch the shorts from the original series. I have the Aeon Flux Collection in queue for Netflix to send, but the status shows 'Very long wait', and has for some time. Alas.

Well, I did a search this morning for Brokeback Mountain, and I finally found a theatre that was showing the movie...in Austin, Tx...For some reason, I don't think that I will be making the drive...I can only hope that some of the Oklahoma theatre owners will open their minds enough to bring the movie to their theatre...A friend of mine said if it does well in other places, this might change their minds...a prospect of profit...

NPR is discussing Brokeback Mountain on a program this afternoon (Fresh Air.. I think), if anyone is interested and able to tune in.
I checked Tulsa listings this afternoon and was a bit surprised that AMC is not showing Brokeback Mountain, and was reeeeeally disappointed to see that Memoirs of a Geisha wasn't among the films opening this weekend. The AMC theater is showing Capote, The Squid and the Whale, and Good night, and Good Luck.

I've also been looking forward to Transamerica, which opens December 23. Hopefully, Southroads AMC will carry it. www.apple.com/trailers/weinstein/transamerica/trailer1/Stanley is a perfectly adjusted, conservative trans-sexual who’s about to take the final step to becoming Bree, the woman he always wanted to be - until he finds out that he is the parent of a long-lost 17 year old son. Afraid to tell the rebellious teen-ager the truth, he embarks on a journey with him that will challenge and change both their lives

FINALLY!!! AMC Southroads has Brokeback Mountain...and I will be making my hour long trek from Tahlequah to Tulsa sometime this weekend to see it...so now, no one will no longer have to hear me whining about wanting to see it and Oklahoma not providing it...*grin*!!!
PS...I now have this stupid song running thru my head
"FINALLY It's happening to me..."...FOR THE LOVE OF PEACE...MAKE IT STOP!!!
PSS...Hope everyone is recovering well from the holidays...

I never get to go out with my wife! We don't know any sitters in McAllen, so we depend upon the kindness of our families to give us a night out when we return to Oklahoma. Frequently, this means that we don’t get to go out at all, not because our families are not kind, but because they want to spend as much time with us as they can. My mother definitely fell into this category this year, so we were hoping against hope that Jenn’s mom would watch the little ones tonight so that Jenn and I could go out. Alas, she is quite busy herself, but I think that Jenn's brother and his wonderful girlfriend (Kim) are going to come through for us. This means that Jenn and I will get to go see Brokeback Mountain tonight! David and Chad may also come along, so it should be fun. If anyone else is interested, we are probably going to try to catch the 6:45 here in Norman.
Here is a question for you guys and gals. I am not homophobic in the sense that I am for gay marriage (and civil unions) and I (pr/t)each against discrimination at every opportunity. On the other hand, I do get a sick feeling when I watch two guys kiss. It’s not unlike the feeling I get watching Ron Burgundy eat his plate of poop. I feel pretty much the same when I see two girls kiss, but the feeling isn't as extreme. I don't feel guilty for having this feeling. But should I? I think we can change the way we feel about things. Is this one of the things that I should try to change?
There is an exception to it. I’ve watched Six Feet Under since its second season. It was one of my favorite shows on HBO. There was a gay couple on the show, David and Keith, and after watching them kiss for five years, I was able to get over the gross factor. A couple of times, I was even able to see their kisses as an exchange of love. But I never could work up the neutrality of seeing them as hot. Should that be my goal as a heterosexual man? Should I be trying to see homosexual acts as hot?
What do you think?

We finally made it to Tulsa this weekend to see Memoirs of a Geisha. Was it worth the wait? Well, considering I've been anticipating the release of this film for about a year, probably...not. Books are always better. They just are, dammit. I really need to learn to do one or the other, or allow plenty of time to lapse between the reading and viewing. Memoirs of a Geisha would have worked better as a foreign film. The dialogue in English was just, well, annoying. The cast was fantastic, but there wasn't time for adequate character development and a lot of the detail from the book didn't make it to the film. It's a great story. If you have the time, read the book. I'd give the movie a C.
