Dazed, Clover watches Stormrunner hurry through the tunnels in search of Brightpaw and a death cure. At the mention of the owl, Clover stiffens and returns her gaze to Vine. "Wait. Did you say an owl? An owl was in your dream, too?"
Vine kind of tilts his head to one side and looks at his sister. She quickly shifts the subject back to Vine's dilemma and away from the brief mention of her own dream. "Why would a cure for flea infestation keep you from dying. I don't --" at this moment, Vine's ear starts twitching slightly. Clover squints. Upon closer examination, she discovers the source of the twitch - a flea is scurrying across his head from one ear to the other.
"Ewww! Viiiine. You're not dying. You've got FLEAS!" Vine tries to shush his sister. "I oughta box your ears! And now poor Stormrunner... Oh, geez. Stormrunner..." Clover's voice trails off as she looks back in the direction her other brother had gone. In spite of herself, she chuckles. And then she punches Vine in the arm.

Wow! I hadn't checked in for a while and can hardly believe the action. Don't let me interfere. I have a couple of questions, if the idea of a blossom game was on the level, I'd happily accommodate. If the idea of a trip to a spring (there's one in the forest down hill from the clearing), I'd be happy to guide that excursion on its own thread.
One last thing, I started this at the worst time not anticipating anything like this response. It's the end of the semester, and I have papers to read up to my eyebones. Also, I'm splitting the country for three weeks this month. Sigh. You can hate me for my lack of vision. I'll check in and run whatever excursions, games, or investigations you like in the mean time and resume on returning on May 30th.

Where are you going and why? Not trying to be demanding, just interested. It's impossible to modify inflection while typing.

(Actually, Tyler, from a strictly linguistic perspective, inflection is as frequent in written as spoken language--assuming you're making some degree of grammatical sense--and modification is precisely how inflection takes place. Inflection is simply a language's system of predictable word transformations to serve grammatical functions. This includes person/number conjugation in verbs, case declinsions in nouns, etc. So, even your sentence about the impossibilty of typed inflection itself bore any number of inflections. You're more likely referring to INTONATION, not inflection...

I'm a bad person. Work is killing me, and I'm leaving the country in five days. Forgive me for starting this at the worst possible moment. I vow to get a proper restart with maps in June. Sorry!!!

Jeff, what are Alpha-omega bits?

Hey Nick!
Alpha and Omega are the first and last letters in the Greek alphabet (alpha and beta are the first two). In Revelations--a book that seriously freaked me out when I was just about your age-- John the Seer says: "'I am the Alpha and the Omega,' says the Lord God, who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty."
The cartoon is too small to see all its elements but if you save it to your desktop you can see that the cereal is made by Post-trib and that there is an end-times decoder ring inside each and every box--I've always loved that expression "each and every" it seems to suggest something beyond simple redundancy.
I am using it as my display picture because I think the idea of a bowl of God cereal is funny. I also like to poke fun of people who market products aimed at Christians. Elsewhere on the board Rick, I think, posted something about a candle called "His Essence" which is supposed to smell like Jesus. I find it bewildering that Christians buy any of this crap when Jesus engaged in one of his few acts of real violence in direct response to it. (See Mark 11:15-19--and if you want a real head scratcher look at Mark 11:12-14 for Jesus cursing a tree of all things.)
Thanks for the question Nick! I see you don't have a display picture yet. What sort of image would reflect your personality?
Jeff

The family got what it deserved.

Jeff's family or the farmer's family? And why did they deserve it?

The farmer's family of course. Rabbits (like all 'lesser' forms of life) have more of a right to live than humans. No human is good enough, so suffering by any type of animal is well deserved.

...did we completely abandon this? Does anyone know where Mike went and if he will be returning to the board?

What is exalt?
|
|
|
Post by Jeff on Oct 13, 2005 14:15:01 GMT -5
Exalt means "to raise up" (ex means out, up, away and altus mean high). So it is not exactly the opposite of smite which originally meant something like "to smear, to rub" but came to mean "to throw, fling, or strike." (You can get lots of wonderful information about etymology on this site, which is one of my favorites: www.etymonline.com/ .) Anyway, both terms are associated with the idea of messageboard karma. Karma is a good way to measure what other people think of your posting. Our karma scores help each of us gage whether our posts are helping or offending other people. The absolute value of your karma score isn't as important as how it changes. If your score is positive and moves steadily more positive, then your posts are likely to be engaging and appropriate. Someone out there is exalting you! If your karma goes negative or takes a dip after a post it means that someone has smitten you. For whatever reason, they didn't like what you posted that day. (This has happened to me once or twice, and I am in the process of learning my lessons.) So exalt people when you agree with or like what they say, and smite them if they offend you or you disapprove of the way they are interacting with others. Your opinion can shape the way the board works, even if you don't have anything to contribute to a particular topic. (But I hope that you do!) Jeff PS I was honored to give you your first point of karma just now!

Karma also helps to discourage ideas that don’t fit within the most popular opinions on the board… we want to keep people afraid to post what they really think and have to say for fear of loosing popularity… err karma points.
