Stormrunner wakes up surprisingly early. Having beat everyone else awake, he moves to his parents room, wanting to ask his father for permission to go off to investigate a newly found spring his hummingbird friend has been telling him about. Stormrunner normally doesn’t bother asking permission for something like this, but Steamweed has been getting angry with Stormrunners increasing forays out beyond the designated area his siblings have been granted. Once he gets to the parents room, he finds how neither of them are there. Surprised, he sits there for a moment, looking into an empty room. Finally he goes back to his own room. Sitting on the still warm spot where he slept, he eventually looks up with a thought. Gathering some acorns he’s kept from some of the adventures he’s been on, he leaves his room.
He goes to Vine’s area of the burrow and peers inside the room. Seeing that Vine is still asleep, he huffs in irritation. He clears his throat, but Vine keeps sleeping. He starts stratching behind his right ear, letting his foot thump against the floor a little harder than is normal… nothing. Finally he picks up one of the acorns, and with a gleam in his eye, he throws it straight at his brother who’s still blissfully deep in slumber. The acorn hits Vine right between the eyes with a sharp pinging sound. Instantly Vine’s eyes dart open and his ears shoot up. Stormrunner, having ducked behind the doorway, is holding both his paws up to his mouth, trying hard to stifle his laughing. Hearing the obvious giggling, Vine recognizes the culprit. Eventually Stormrunner peaks around the corner, only to see his brother bunny squinting at him with eyes redder than normal. Stormrunner hops into the room, still choking back laughter, and says, ‘hey it’s about time you got up!’ Vine just keeps looking at him, not saying anything yet. ‘Oh calm down. I had to wake you up some how! Our parents are gone!’

Brightpaw wakes and watches his siblings go about their tasks. He helps when he can, but it is infrequent. Mostly he is not needed as they are capable. He sits at the mouth of the warren and waits, his tiny intellect fascinated by the multifariousness of things: Here is a bird song, there a bluebottle, beyond is my brother, whom I love. The sun is hot. I notice that. And the wind is nice. The simple feelings wash over me and completely erase any thought that preceded them. In this innocence I await the return of my beloved parents.

Squeeksfur has been up for hours, sitting outside watching night become day and thinking thoughts, some deep, others of little import. The morning air is cold, and the dew on his fur causes him to shiver a bit. Suddenly, his ears twitch with the sound of something approaching and he readies himself for flight, just in case.

(Vine has the makings of a full-blown flea infestation right now, and was up very late scratching and suffering.)
The parents are gone, eh? Funny, I never even heard them come in last night. And already out getting a jump on the day. Well, I suppose it was a short night for several of us.
"Hey, Stormrunner. Where are you off to this morning?"
I'm doing my best to keep from rubbing the spot on my forehead where that acorn whacked me. Don't rub, don't scratch... Please, no scratching; it'll never stop. Perhaps I could use a bath. Maybe that would do the trick.
"You're not headed down to that spring, are you? Give me a minute to compose myself, and I'll walk with you."
As I'm rising up, stretching my feet, back, and neck, I turn back to see many small flecks of dried blood where I had been. Wow. Now that's no good at all. I suppose I shouldn't get too close to Stormrunner. I'd really hate for him to be as miserable as I've been. At the same time, I've been avoiding everyone enough as it is. Maybe they'll start to think something's wrong. I haven't been myself. It seems like I haven't even had a chance to think. I've got to do something about this. Maybe we'll run into Mom outside, and she'll be able to find me something to get me some relief.

Squeeksfur tenses as the sound comes closer. He knows he should flee, but his curiosity overcomes his fear and he stays put. He sniffs the air but can not tell what it is. Closer and closer the sound approaches, until it is just beyond the grass edge next to him. The grass spreads...and out comes a shrew, mumbling to himself, staring at the ground as he walked. Squeeksfur shakes his head, and with a sigh, turns to head back to the burrow. It is probably time for breakfast and he doesn't want to get in trouble again, like the last ten times he missed breakfast.

Clover wakes up with a start, and it takes her a moment to realize she is safe in her room. Familiar sounds of her brothers and sisters drift in from without. "It was just a dream," she mutters to herself, and breathes in the morning air. Clover has been haunted by bad dreams as of late. The first nightmare started a few nights ago and they have gotten increasingly worse. She hasn't mentioned them to anyone else, but it is obvious she hasn't been sleeping well.
Clover yawns, stretches and sits in her room a bit longer before deciding to join the others. On her way through the burrow, she peeks into her parents room. Empty. "Hmm.. guess it's later than I thought." She continues on her way to meet up with her siblings, assuming her parents are out enjoying the morning as well.

Squeeksfur enters the burrow, unnoticed by his brothers and sisters as usual. He hops up to his parents, says "hi Mom, hi Dad," grabs some lettuce and hops away just as he hears his mom shout after him "Be careful and stay close to the burrow and mind your brothers and sisters." He's the second oldest and yet because he is the smallest, he is treated like the baby. Squeeksfur sulks away, vowing to never obey his brothers or sisters. He hops through the entrance to the burrow and out into the sun, hopefully to find some adventure.

When Vine finally gets up and moves over to where his brother is, the scent of old blood hits Stormrunner square in the face. Stepping back, Stormrunner says, "Oh wow! What's that? What's wrong with you?" He starts to look over this sibling, looking for signs of any kind of injury. Seeing bits of dried blood spotted throughout Vine's fur, he exclaims, "Gosh what is that?" as he hops even further back, causing him to shoot back into the tunnel. As Stormrunner springs from Vine's room, he almost slams into Clover who's just come around the bend. He gasps as Clover quickly comes to a stop, causing him to jump back into Vine's room with his fists raised in a defensive stance. "Oh Clover what are you doing? You scared me." Turning to Vine he says, "Look at all the blood on him. I hit him with an acorn, but I don't think that caused all of that... did it? I hope not; if so I'm sorry!"
Turning back to Clover, Stormrunner says, "By the way we were going down to this new spring I've heard about. Have you seen mom and dad? They aren't here. I don't know where they are. Maybe they heard about the spring! Lets go see if they're there. I'm hungry and haven't eaten yet maybe they're there and their is stuff to eat there."

(Vine, who is completely oblivious to all the 'there' alliteration in Stormrunner's last sentence--as the speech of bunnies is not quite English--is pleased to see herbalist sister Clover. She might be able to help Vine with the flea problem. But at any rate, it's time for the first fib of the day.)
"No, brother, you and your acorn caused nothing but my wakefullness." I lean in closer. "But, I'd stay back if I were you. Especially if you've not eaten today." Here it comes, here it comes. "You see, I'm dying."
"You know how I've not been around much of late? Well, a few evenings ago, I was out on the knob where all the daisies grow. I was just relaxing, and minding my own business. I hadn't eaten, yet, so I started digging for grubs. Suddenly, I heard a terrible commotion behind me. There was a small frog struggling on his side. I ran over to him. 'What's wrong, what's wrong,' I asked. He told me that he'd eaten a big fuzzy caterpiller the day before, and now his stomach was giving him all kinds of grief. 'Well, maybe you just need a rubbing.' He whinced a bit, then added, 'I don't know, but if you think it will help, then please go ahead. Argh!' So, I started rubbing on his belly. Sure enough, there was something in there, and it was fighting to get out. All of a sudden, the frog belched and--you'd never guess--out flew a moth! But it wasn't just any moth. It was deep black, with purple wings and firey red eyes. 'Aha! You two have conspired to eat me!' she said. I was so shocked, I didn't know what to say. 'As punishment, I'm going to strike both of you dead as stones!' She started waving her wings really quickly. Like... well, like this... (a silly flailing about) I didn't want to stay around to see what happened next, so I darted away. But then I felt this sharp pain in my back, like I'd been hit by something. I turned around, but saw no more moth. And the frog... oh, poor guy... he was stumbling around like he couldn't stand up, and was bleeding from all parts of his body. He was dead before I could ask him what had happened. I started to head home, but every time I passed another creature, it started to show signs of dizziness... or, better yet, clumsiness. That's why I've been staying away from everyone. And then last night, I noticed that I was bleeding all over. So, I've just been keeping to myself. I figured I'd just die in peace, right here in my own room." I struggle to muster a few whimpers.
"And then, when you came in, I noticed something very DISTURBING. You seem to be very clumsy this morning. Why, you even tripped over our fair sister! No, no, no! What have I done? Stormrunner, you're as good as dead! And maybe you, too, Clover!"

Clover's annoyance with having nearly been trounced turns to concern for her brother, Vine. She moves into the room to get a closer look at Vine, but slows and becomes increasingly more cautious as Vine tells his tale. Her eyes widen as Vine says, "you too, Clover" and she quickly hops back from her brother.
"D-dying? Dying? You're dying?" She stammers, looking helplessly between Vine and Stormrunner.

Stormrunner's eyes are at least as wide as Clover's. His mouth drops open as he begins to cry. "No, no, no! We can't be dying!" He turns to both Clover and Vine in a near helpless panic. "Oh the humanity! What a world, what a world!" Then, in the middle of his full blown panic, he kind of tilts his head to the side and says, "Wait, I don't feel dizzy." He then starts to check himself for dizziness by looking around quickly in all directions, which of course begins to make him dizzy. Stopping after a few moments he gives a big, teary eyed look at both of his siblings, with his mouth slightly open and quivering. "I am dizzy!" He exclaims as he grabs both Clover and Vine, shaking them about. Suddenly he stops and perks up. “Wait, maybe….” Letting go of his brother and sister and neglecting to finish his sentence, Stormrunner takes off down the tunnels at full speed. He starts yelling as loud as he can. “Brightpaw! Brightpaw! Me, Clover, and Vine are dying right now! Save us Brightpaw! Save us!”

(The trick to safe lying is knowing when to pull back before it gets out of hand. A good liar knows the difference between fibs and lies. Vine is not a good or safe liar, only a frequent one.)
Wait, that's not how I intended that to go down at all. I was just hoping to get a free meal and some sympathy or something. Got to think.... And not scratch. Scratching is bad. I suppose I could follow him. I definitely can't catch him, but maybe I can disarm the situation.
"...Dying to make it down to the spring this morning, right?!? Isn't that what you meant to say? Eh? Storm, we don't want to alarm anyone needlessly!"
Okay, this isn't going to work.
"Clover, you've got to stop him. I don't... uh... want him to... uh... upset anyone... since... I think... I KNOW THE ANTIDOTE! Yeah! I know the antidote. I didn't want to say it before, because I thought you might think I was loosing my mind. But last night, I had a dream about how to remove the curse. In my dream, a big owl was swooping down to kill me. I begged him not to hurt me, but rather wait a little while, you know, since I was dying anyway. Instead of killing me, he perched on a low limb above me. 'Dying? What's wrong with you?' I was scared out of my skin, but I trusted him for some reason. 'Well, a dark moth cursed me, and now I've only got a little while left to live. In fact, now that you've come close to me, you may have the curse, too.' He chuckled. 'Nonsense! I can't be killed because I make my nest out of...uh...' Ooh. Now I can't remember what he said! Oh, what's it called. You know, that herb (or was it a combination of herbs) that gets rid of flea infestations? I just can't think of what he called it. In fact, he even said how it was supposed to be prepared. Oh... YOU know what I'm talking about, right? At any rate, I have a feeling that the dream was no dream. 'Cos, when I woke up, I was out of breath, like I'd been running from something, maybe an owl!"

Sprinkles, I don't know what universe you happen to live in, but Squeeksfur saw his parents and said hi to them and was reprimanded by his mother in this one. Squeeksfur remembers all of this and Squeeksfur remembers all and sees all, and sometimes hears all, but only on the weekend. Squeeksfur now hops about in the field looking for things that aren't his family.
