Adam,
I was simply commenting on your renowned ability to sleep just about anywhere, in just about any position and through just about anything.
I was wondering: Katie and I are needing some electrical work done on our house. I would do it my self except I'm a freaking idiot, and don't know squat about electrical stuff. Is this something you might be able to come down and tell me what to do, and then I do it? I'm sure that with such a wonderful description you'll be full of questions as to what I'm going on about. I'd be happy to answer if you think you might be able to help.
Thanks for your time. rickus

Just be sure to actually cut the power. Last time when Adam helped me out this way I turned off most everything but the lines he was actually working on. I am sure glad that I didn't fry him!!
Thanks again Adam!

My martial arts training now consists of personal training. I learned quite a bit in a short amount of time a year ago, so I've spent and am spending my training time on trying to be able to actually perform adequately the stuff we covered. My sifu is going to nursing school right now and is too busy to be giving out free lessons, but I've got quite enough to work on from the time I did have. He should graduate before too much longer, then we'll get back at it.

Dealing with Electricity: 1 Respect it and never fear it, if you fear it don't ever mess with it.
2 wire colors what do they mean: Black is usually your power or hot line Wht is your nuetral simular to the ground, but can have some power on it Bare or Green wires are your grounding should never have any power on them. Red is usually a traveler for your power when dealing with 3-way switches, and can also be the other side of a hot line for your heavy appliances like dryers and large air conditionser.
3 Some basic tools for doing electrical work around your house: 1 A five in one screwdriver would have all the different heads that you will need (big and small philips and flat tip)
2 wire strippers for solid wire 18 gauge to 10 gauge
3 Kneedle nose plyers
4 Electric line tester (this is just to leads attached to a small light that you plug in to see if a line is hot or not)
Extra items that would be usefull Linemans's Plyers Utility knife
Ok, that's a start. The other things to concider is where is your main breaker box located and does it have any empty slots to add more breakers if needed.
You need to know your breaker box brand and if it has Residential breakers or Commercial ones, if the handles are brown and not black that means they are Residential.
How easy is yur box to reach, can you get to it through the attic.
Do you have an attic space, if so is everything covered up with flooring or just loose insulation. My point here is some people like to floor their attics to creat more storage space, but in turn makes it harder to do electrical work.
If you like Rick I'm free this Saturday, I could come down and walk through with you and get a better idea of what your wanting and how hard or easy it will be. Do you have a latter for getting into the attic if needed??
You can call me at home 405-377-6741 anytime after 7:30pm, but I head to work at 8:30pm to get to perry on time or you can catch me after 5pm on Fridays.

Hey Adam,
Well... I'm needing to rewire the house. Currently I have two breaker boxes on the house. One outside the house just off the meter (8 circuits). And another (6 circuits) on the inside of the same wall, (the utility room).
The attic is unfinished and has a hodge podge of insulation in it. Our most recent addition is an R 30 rated Cellulose. That shouldn't matter too much though, as the house is compete with vintage 1939 ridged conduit. The entire house with the exception of the kitchen has 2 pronged outlets. This is what got me digging into the outlet housings in the first place. As I'm sure you've figured out by now Katie and I have quite a computer collection. Well In order to use the computers I was simply going to replace the old two pronged outlets with new grounded outlets. Only there are no ground lines going to the housings. So I decided to ground the outlets to the conduit. This is working for now, but I would like to replace the old and now rotting cloth & resin covered wires with new color coded plastic covered wire.
And lastly, I would like to run a subterranean line out to the garage which currently has no current. I've been doing a lot of wood working lately and I'm running an extension line from the kitchen out the back door to the garage to an old surge protector where it run all of my tools. This often causes the kitchen breaker to trip. Surprised? No. Me either.
Last year I bought a new Square D Homeline 120/240 breaker box that will house 20 circuits. About a mile of 14 gage wire Black/White/Green, and a new 10 Ft. ground rod. I planned on using as many of the old breakers as possible.
So that's the whole story. Do you think you can help?
My parents anniversary is this weekend and my father has asked Katie and I to come up to P-town for a surprise anniversary party. Also I'm managing the Yukon Recycling Center Saturday morning.
I don't have anything planned (that I can think of) the following Saturday, the 17th. If you can make it I'll have donuts, hot coffee, lunch, cold beer once we're done looking at the situation, and gas money.
If you need to talk to me, let me know and I can call you tomorrow night around 7:30pm.

Ok, then this is a full project not some patch work. The good thing is as the home owner your legally allowed to do all this wireing with out a licence. I'll check our calender but the 17th would be a good day as of so far. I'll need new directions to your house again, and your phone number, I'll bring my tools that I have. The ground rod is going to be the tough part as I don't have a post driver or a hammer drill at this time, something I need to priece for my own busness later on anyway.
A walk through with you will help in decideing the location and how many outlets you may need. Only thing I can thing of right off is that even though the 15 gauge wire will work, #12 would be much better for long runs and more energy effective on your electric bill in the long run. But, hold off on buying any more items for now. When I do head that way what time would be good for you???

Hi all, I've had some interesting events happen to me in just the last week and a half.
Just a quick run down first.
2004 I finally decide to get my electrician's liecne 2004 Dec I succeed 2005 Apr I'm let go from FTI after 6yrs 2005 Mar I go to work at Ditch Witch I realize very quickly that this is not the job I wish to be doing. I start seriously concerding joining the National Guard for the $15,000 bonus, I get a call from my brother trying to guilt trip me into not joining and when that doesn't work he threatens me in a fashion. Something I'm still concedering stomping the shit out of him for, but that's another subject. I talk with my sister and my mother both of which bring up good points. Finally I talk with my father and he starts to get on to me, where I then find the courage to confront him and stand my ground and explain that I have given this a great deal of though and that it's not something I am taking lightly. I then strike a bargain that if I can find a part time electrician job then I won't join. Low and be hold after calling 17 elcectricians one of them hires me right after byeing me breakfast at my intervew and another calls me back wanting to talk with me.
Then just last month one of the electricians called and offered me a full time job, but I decided grudling to turn him down for now so as to save up my money and try to be an electrician full time starting Jan 2006.
Then Just 1 1/2 week ago the electrician I'm working for part time anouces that he plans to retire in 6 months and he is offer his daughter and I first shot at byeing his buisness a $10,000 value.
So I talk with my Dad who valunteers to come up that Sunday, after he visits with the electrician and sees the equipment and truck. My Dad does something I never though I'd ever hear him do (He gives me his blessing, by saying "this is a really good deal and we will make this happen even if I have to front all of the money"
So starting January 2006 I will be a part owner in Freeman Electric here in Stillwater.
Tyler you may not believe in God and that's fine and like you I have no use for Religian either. But I know that the God I serve has worked all things for good and not because I deserve anything which I don't, he just so happened to put me in the right place at the right time.
I can and maybe I will write out how all these thing seemed to fall perfectly into place to allow for this to happen. Then you the group can be your own judge, but as for me and my family we do believe, no matter how silly that may make us seem to others and I will be truely honored to share my faith with my children as they grow to adult hood.
Talk soon

Thanks for your support, I know I still have many self doudts, much like starting a new job. But in time I'll gain plenty of confidence in time. Until then it's just one more demon to fight, something I'm sure to talk about more in the other folder I started.
Thanks again

Tell me Tyler you mentioned some electrical work, do you have some that your thinking about wanting to do?

Post by Tyler on Oct 20, 2005 8:42:38 GMT -5
I do all my own electrician work. Since Tammy is a nurse, I don't have to go to the emergency room all that often, no more than once a month. Well, except the garage-door opener thing. But I've never had to go more than twice in the same day. Not for electrician stuff anyway. There was the potato gun misfire and it wasn't like they were separate trips. They just wanted me to leave the emergency room between debridements because the smoldering hair was causing the respiratory patients to have attacks. So, no, no electrician work. Besides, I'm pretty sure since you are an actual electician if you were to lay eyes on my work, you'd lose your licensure if you didn't kill me on the spot. Seriously now, I was just excited about your newfound business. There will be electrical work in the future, I promise. If nothing else, then just putting out the inevitable electrical fires.

A three way switch is where you come in on one side of a room and turn on the light and as you leave the other side you can turn it off. Two switches controlling one light. Kind of like you being the light and the switches being the girls.
Have fun
