If you're going to charge, the way you should do it is communally. Take the cost, divide it per song, and charge that. Imagine, if you will, that it cost you $300 for running the station and the equipment for a month. You could play around 14,400 songs in a month, so it'd cost someone a little over .02 to have their song play during that time. Now, this is assuming that you have 14,400 songs to play. If you only had one to play over and over, it'd cost $300. You guys have more than one song, right?

Good point, Tyler.
But you know, this all got me to thinking, why am I so set on a Live365 account? I think it's because I figured it would be the easiest and most accessable way to do it. For some reason, I'd assumed that the Shoutcast method would require one of us to use our home PC as a server. But why? You know, I've got an awesome webhosting account that I'm already paying $9.95 a month for. It's got 1gb of space, and 10gb of monthly transfer. To get that amount of space and transfer on Live365, we'd have to pay a gazillion dollars every year. I'm not so big on that. And besides, I've been reading-up on this "streaming audio" thing, and it looks like the main reason an Internet broadcaster would choose to go with Live365 is because they handle the payment of royalties for you, in the event that you happen to play copywrited music. That's actually their main selling point: We pay the royalties on all the copywrited music you play, so ASCAP and BMI stay off your ass. Fact is, we're not going to be playing copywrited material.
So, maybe I'm just now discovering why Jeff was so big on Shoutcast at first. But don't get me wrong -- I still think we should improve the way the station is broadcast. First off, it's ridiculous for Jeff to dedicate his home PC to being a server for the station. This tightly limits the size and scope of what the station can be, and it creates a dilemma for Jeff; in a best-case scenario, Jeff would decide on a regular "broadcasting time," and would have to schedule his other computing activities around those periods. Again, that's not ideal, and it tightly limits the possibilities for Rose Rock Radio.
But what if we set-up Shoutcast on my webhosting account, and used it as the Shoutcast server? I'm not entirely sure this is possible, but it seems reasonable. I'll look into this as I find the time. Offhand, what do you think, Jeff? Keep in mind, I'm good friends with my hosting admin. He'd go out of his way to make any necessary adjustments to my account.
If we can set-up our Shoutcast server on my webhosting space, that would alleviate our biggest roadblock. We've freed-up Jeff's PC, and we've multiplied our station's bandwith by 20 or more.
My second concern was that our station might not be accessible by any media players other than Winamp. Jeff dispelled this concern when he explained how we can open Media Player, input the IP address and port-number as the URL, and play the station through Media Player. Since it works there, I'm willing to bet that it also works similarly in Quicktime, but I haven't tried it. This is great; a "real" internet radio station should play in the major media-player programs.
So, let's say we get Shoutcast set up on my hosting account. The next step would be to set-up a website (something simple at first) with a simple link where you click, and it opens your default media player and begins streaming. That would be even more ideal than the Live365 method, I think; this way, no third-party is involved.
What do you guys think? Does this sound like the better way to go?

I am ripping a movie right now. But in a minute I'll put up the radio station. I'll leave it up for at least 12 hours. I should be able to go online with it at 1 am.

Sarah,
One of these days tell me when you have nothing to do and I'll turn on the radio station for you. I think you would enjoy hearing David R.'s howling on "Goldmine" et. al.

Okay Sarah, I just put up the radio station. I'll try to leave it on all day and well into the night. A word of warning: My audiodrive needs a reformat. It's been about 1 1/2 years since that has been done, so it's running a little slow these days. You may experience some cut outs in the stream. If you are using media player, hit control-U and paste in this url: 68.203.212.90:8000 Jeff

Jeff- I had it playing while at work- there was enough music to get me through the day. There were some pretty memorable tracks, I particularly remember laughing out loud during Ain't Gittin' Any. While I did not get to listen intently the entire day, I did manage to get down some song titles that I liked: hero better mix, undoomed, poor man, sins, the only- just to name a few.
Thanks again!

Anybody want to do another Friday night featured performer? Anyone have any new stuff? Even if we couldn't air it tomorrow, we could do it next week.

I am turning on Rose Rock Radio until the cable guys gets here to hook up our phone. I might leave it up tonight. If anyone is logged on, I promise not to turn it off on you! But if there is no one, I'll work on my stuff. 68.203.212.90:8000 Jeff

I am always taken aback. Has any of us achieved more than this? (I promise that someday I will stop singing its praises. But not today.)

Since I am singing the praises of greatness, let me say to Ryan that “Bloom” and “In Absence” are just as good as Justin's two greatest hits: “Iris” and “Someplace Else.” Those four songs taken together are all the justification my panegyrics will ever need.
Jeff
PS Ryan, is there any way I could get another copy of “In Absence”? I lost my old one, and I would dearly like to add it to the Rose Rock Radio playlist.
