Oh yeah, and there was our original solution to this problem from way back:
Indigenet

Hah! I like it!
Or: Drop only the final "e," and you get "Indigent," which is terribly unflattering, but hilarious, in my opinion. As if we are all penniless vagrants. I'd like to have a station called "Indigent Radio," and I'd only play interviews with hobos, and I'd air their drunken singalongs. I'd do promos saying things like, "Broadcasting live! Tonight! From under the overpass at 21st and Riverside! A show you won't wanna miss! The Tri-State Hobo Chorus! Sponsered by Night Train wine!"

As far as the "radio" part of the name, we can take it or leave it as far as I'm concerned -- but I do want to point out that it has become the standard term used to describe internet-based music streaming. There's no need to confuse matters by describing ourselves as anything other than a "radio" station. Of course, if we wanted to be more correct, we could describe ourselves as "internet radio."

Yeah, nix the "Indigenet" name. I liked it at first, but I don't think anyone outside our circle would understand it. Its semantic value is too insular; only members of the Indigenous Circle would get it. Everyone else would either mis-read it as "indigent" or "indignant," or would never be able to remember it.
So, I'm thinking: What few words would best describe our station? What's the common-ground? We're playing music that was written by individuals without recording contracts. Music by people who make music because they love to. And there's that "grassroots" idea that you were hinting at with the name "Indigenous," as well as the reference to native peoples. All of that is part of who we are. And moreover, isn't Oklahoma a big part of our music?
I remember once, during a weekend in Stillwater when Justin showed me how to play guitar, I asked Justin how he would describe his music, and the music of his band. He and Chris jokingly replied, "Rose rock." I thought that was a very clever phrase, indicating at least three different things: The state rock of Oklahoma (indicating our geographical location), an appreciation of beauty, and (of course) the desire to rock. Over the years, the phrase has stuck with me, as one of the best "labels" I've ever heard given to a genre of music.
What if we called ourselves "Rose Rock Radio?" With Justin and Chris's permission, of course. It's distinctive, it's easy to spell, it's easy to remember, it has historical value for us, and it's got a ring to it.
Moreover, the domain name "www.roserockradio.com" is available, as is the MySpace URL "www.myspace.com/roserockradio."
What do you guys think?

My vote is register it now. It's beautiful, does what we want it to, and it's available. Case Closed, AFAIC.
But, of course, I am just one voter here.

I can call Wassim and get the "roserockradio" domain registered at the drop of a hat. The domain will take 72 hours to propogate through the internet, but the domain is ours the moment I call Wassim and tell him we want it.
The MySpace domain can also be set instantaneously, but once we set it, we can't change it. So, we need to be sure everyone's cool with this domain before we do that. I'll check back tomorrow and see if we've come to a consensus.

New songs added to the Rose Rock Radio line up:
Separated (by Leo) Expatriate Theme Sins Pastorale The Nestling The Drums of East Timor Harmonica Fun That One Song (Still Life) Future Perfect sketch Red Rosey Ridicule
I have no more DM stuff. At this point there are about 120 songs in our line up and about 70 of them are Justin, Chris, David, and the other DM guys.

Hey, Jeff, if you haven't already, go to my Myspace account and pilfer "Bloom," "Poseidon's Daughter," and "By The Hour" for the lineup. Don't put the MySpace version of "Golden Goose Egg" in rotation yet; I've done a newer mix which I think is superior, but I have yet to upload it. I'll let you know when it's available for download.

I didn't have Poseidon's Daughter. I hadn't even heard it, yet. It's too cool.
I put it in the mix and pulled Golden Goose Egg, as per your request.

Oh my dear lord, I had totally forgotten about "rose rock." That gets my vote!
Jeff... do you have any of the REALLY old Dnm stuff?
Or better yet, do you want it?

Chris: I'd love to have that old old tape with (Let's Talk About) White Women, Bad Day on Henderson Harbor, et al. If you have these on mp3 upload them to one of our accounts, please! The briefcase in indigenousradio@yahoo.com is empty. That is 30MB. You should be able to fit almost everything in there if you have the time.
Radio update: We've had 2 listeners (not including myself) for most of the day. And two or three listeners who tuned in for about 1 minute.
Even if it's just us, I still value the fact that we are propagating our best moments among ourselves. That's how I want to live my life, anyway.

Hey, Ryan, would it be possible to put some of Idiot Plot's music in the line up? Maybe?

I uploaded three songs from <<Pocket-Veto>> (the correct spelling of the album...) to the Yahoo briefcase. Internet Explorer crashed when I tried to do the fourth, so I took it as a sign. Anyway, this is a good sampler to start. I want to hear what Justin thinks about adding any more... do we dare inflict more of our high-school meta-racism on the station?
Oh, by the way, Jeff... "Ain't Gittin' Any" was too long to keep it at 5 MB (you just can't contain "Ain't Gittin' Any"!!), so I split it in two, converted them to MP3s, and then uploaded them individually. I assume you have the wherewithal to put them back together...

I've never heard "Amen, Brother", "Back'ards Test", or "Twinkle, Twinkle." And unless "Invisible" is a permutation of "Inaudible" I've not heard that one either. Does Justin care if we listen to these true rarities? If not, do you have Cecil these days, Chris? Can you mix them down?

I'll do you one better... I don't trust my mixing skills, so I may mix them down soon, but as for now, I'm going to make a digital burn of each of the four tracks, from start to finish, with a sync mark at the beginning. Then I'll mail y'all a disk with 'em. Sounds like "a bit too much" work, eh? ;^)
Oh, and yes, I do have Cecil... however, he has certainly seen better days. I'm not sure that the left channel works at all... and the fast-forward button doesn't work.

Seriously, please don't. Those are better left unheard and I beg you please not to mix that tape down.

Amen, brother...
Actually, don't worry, I won't mix down the song where you sing, "I wish I wasn't a freak/ And wasn't a fag and a geek."
And fear not, I'm not mixing -- I'm just trying to digitize the tape. It isn't working too well though... But aren't you glad the masters still exist??

Hey guys, I went to work with my Tascam 424 MkIII this evening and I started getting a terrible popping sound during playback. And then I remembered that I had often heard the same popping sound while I was mixing down the DM stuff. This means that most likely some of degeneration that I thought was coming from my tapes was actually coming from my four track.
My question is have any of you ever experienced this problem? (This never happened on my old Yamaha MT100.) Does it come from dirty tape heads? Do I need to degauss? Or is it a worse problem?
I just cleaned the tape heads with isopropyl and they sounded pretty good for the first 500 feet of playback, but then the popping started again. Any insight would be much appreciated.

Whoa! I'm having the same damn problem... every few seconds there's a popping sound, but it comes and goes, and is more prevalent the more sound there is. Huh...
Update: I posted an MP3 called "winterpop" to the indigenousradio briefcase (folder: My Documents) which has some of the popping I'm talking about.
