I was teaching Plato's Republic today, and I can usually feel some religious zeal when I say the words, "Those who rule must not have, and those who have must not rule." At the same time, I have to suppress a shiver when Plato says, "Those who will not live in harmony must be persuaded or compelled." In the end, I take comfort in the fact that there are lots of experiments in human happiness going on all around us. But I am not so foolish as to pretend that the real cost of it isn't a heapin' helpin' of the darkness of The Cave.

I really am making a political point with that last cartoon, I promise. It is a little autobiographical, but our immediate response to shit like the Andrea Yates story says a lot about the kinds of political solutions we are attracted to. (I know you guys don't want me to try to explain everything. You are smart people. Please, forgive.)

PS If you follow the link in the last cartoon, then you owe it to yourself to listen to the tics.
PPS It's also supposed to say "out of" instead of "of out" but I typed it incorrectly.
