Sorry guys and gals, but I'll be runing a little behind in this discussion. We just got news that Priscilla's father has passed away. He's been suffering from cancer for the last 2 months, so this was no surprise. Yes, Priscilla did get to make a trip by plane with the kids to see him while he was still up and doing ok, so she got to say her good byes and all.
We will leave out for Illinois Thursday mornin at 1am drive to Kansas to catch a train on there then we will be back in Stillwater late Monday night.
Keep us in your prayers that we will have a safe and unevent full trip while traveling.
Be good my friends and make sure that your loved ones always know how much you care. Capt Ad.

We're very sorry to hear about your loss. If there is anything we can do to help, do not hesitate to ask. Stillwater is very close and no task is too taxing.
Your friends, Rick and Katie

Just an update, all went well on our trip no troubles. Thanks for your concerns and prayers. I can say one thing that I've always felt truly blessed in that I've never wanted for friends and that they have always been there for me either in spirit or physically.
One thing that actually made this a pleasent experiance, is the fact that Mr. Hacket is a believer and we have no doubte that he is with God, the comfort in knowing this alone wipes away a multitude of tears and brings true smiles of joy for the family. He didn't suffer in his last days, I was told that he didn't even need the morphine that was prescribed and that he got to see everyone that wanted to see him before his passing. There was sadness at the wake and funneral, but no uncontrollable weeping and I believe it was because everyone knew he was home with God, no more of this worlds pain could touch him anymore. This made it a day to be happy instead of a day of filled with loss and sorrow of the unknown. It really does give a person peace.
Thank you all and Priscilla thanks you also.

I can start this week, too. Rick probably won't be able to, since he's leaving for Washington on Wednesday and will not be lugging his laptop up the mountain with him. Are we doing the first three lessons?

Okay, I’ve finally finished listening to the first three lessons…and only 3 weeks after I started. Geesh! I was particularly interested in the third lesson. As a new reader of the Bible (in the past, I only read a few lines every once in a while trying to find ways to argue with Christians), I was really interested in what JB had to say about baptism. I understand his distinction between ritual and real baptisms, and I was glad to hear that he doesn’t think baptism, at least ritual baptism, is necessary to salvation. But what really captivated my attention was his description of baptism at that time in history.
JB says that Jews were not baptized—they didn’t have to be, because they were already the chosen ones. Gentiles, however, would sometimes be baptized when they made an acknowledgment of and wished to be identified with the God of Abraham. So what were all these people doing out in the wilderness being dunked by a guy in camel’s hair? JB said they were acknowledging that what John says was true—the Messiah had come—and they wanted to identify with the Messiah.
But is that what it says in Mark? My version says that John came baptizing in the wilderness and preaching a baptism of repentance for the remission of sins. The people were baptized in the Jordan River, confessing their sins. He did preach about one coming after him who was greater than him, and I’m assuming he let the people in on the secret that this guy was the Messiah, but why were these people out in the wilderness getting baptized? To identify with the Messiah, to repent of their sins, or both? Did they hear the message that their sins had been washed away, and oh, by the way, there’s a Messiah coming soon? Did Jews regularly get baptized to repent for sins, or was this a completely new thing? Did any of this happen at all and is it even important whether it did or didn’t?
And if it did happen, what kind of message did that send to the Jewish officials? There’s a crazy guy out there saying that the Messiah has come, and he’s baptizing JEWS!!!! Maybe that’s the real message here: JEWS are being baptized—something crazy is happening! We’d better behead this guy!

It looks like there was plenty of ritual washing going on in Judaism, but was it the same thing as baptism? Was John performing a regular ol' purification ritual at the Jordan River? Or was this the kind of baptism traditionally performed for converts?
Amanda, did you get the same kind of ideas from the lessons? I'd hate to put words in JB's mouth--it may have been my interpretation, after all. Now that I've looked at a few sources, it looks as though there are many, many interpretations about what this whole baptism part at the beginning of the gospels is about. What do you guys think?

Hello katie haven't got to read the whole dission as yet, but will.
Baptism comes in two ways one is spiritaul the other is physical. The spiritaul comes when you believe, the physical is you publicly expressing to the world around you that you have chosen to believe in Jesus as your personal savior. Thus the dunking into the water is a symbol of your assosiation with the death and reserection of Jesus.
Hope to comment more as time permitts.

Are we ever going to do anymore of Mark?
Good question. I've actually made it through lesson 8 or 9, but stopped for the time being since I wasn't sure if anyone else was still plodding along. (I've completed some other studies at the site in the meantime and am currently working on The Commission.) Is anyone interested in continuing using the the audio files from Countryside, or do we want to press on without them, taking a handful of verses at a time for study?
