That's a superb example of what we at AU called "retrailering," (there's probably some other word for it, but I don't know what it is) which was an exercise we did in the advanced editing classes (I say we, even though I didn't take that class). One of my favorites was by a friend of mine who took "Forrest Gump" and turned it into a political spy thriller. Spymaster Gump (full of code phrases that he got from his "Momma") gets drawn into a dangerous game full of international intrigue. None of the ones I saw at AU, however, were quite this good.
One of the twists of the assignment one year was that there were certain stock trailer songs that you couldn't use (e.g. James Brown's "I Feel Good").
