I am trying to finish this old song tonight. It's part of my project to finally record vocals for the songs that I wrote 15-20 years ago. I always had a vocal in mind, I just became so disenchanted with my lyrics and my voice that I stopped recording them. I am trying to stay as close as I can to the original lyrics, but the truth is I've forgotten some of them. Where I have to fill in, I try to put myself in my 20-22 year old mind.
I had written a trilogy of songs about a nameless female, M. The M is for Mary and Memory. And the songs are about how time erases what cannot be saved and preserves what can. The first set of lyrics were for M Will Listen--the other two songs are M Abides and M Full of Grace. This first one is about a special kind of mercy that a kind (? of?) woman and a troublesome memory can create.
I will try to finish this song tonight, but I realize that that is almost impossible. In the meantime, here is the remembered and reconstructed lyric. I will post the song when it is finished.
M Will Listen
M is moving on with her life
M is mighty strong
M will make a gift of her life
M will give me this:
M will make me forget
The words I said and regret
M will make me callous
Maliciously dismiss me
Into hopeless afternoons
Where nothing can survive
M is on my side
M is listening tonight
M will ride the wave of my disease
M will finish well her time with me
These memories deceive me well
M is filling in all the sad details
M is still a friend
M will wallow in all the sad details
M says it's no sin:
M will make me forget
The words I said, I regret
M will make me callous
M will make me hate her
Every hopeless afternoon
Where no love can survive
M is on my side
M is listening tonight
M will ride the wave of my disease
M will finish well her time with me
These memories deceive me well
Deceive me well
Some small part of well
Well enough to tell
Well enough to tell
