Emily and I are playing the Steinway right now. I like it, too, but the Boesendorfer is more to my liking. It has a very mellow low end, and that is my favorite place to play.
Just using the 16 bit samples, each of these pianos weighs in at around 2GB. The 24 bit samples are about 4GB each.
I am going to do a test recording of Emily just so you can hear how it sounds. Stand by...

Okay this is a 32 second Emily piano performance. She used the 16bit Steinway samples, a 2GB library. We left off the sustain pedal and only used room convolution that came with the program. I instructed her to play sometimes loud and sometimes soft, to hit a few high notes and some low ones. And that's it. www.savefile.com/files/3293948

I just listened to it real loud, and there are some issues with some of the releases. The problem, I think, comes from Emily hitting about 10 keys at once. She exceeds the polyphony, that's all. I should have bumped it up before she played...to like 50 voices or something.

What do you think of the tone?

Those piano sounds are really great -- the closest I've heard to a real piano. Listening to the MP3 samples posted on Native Instruments' website, I keep thinking there's a hint of falseness about the sound -- but I bet if I closed my eyes and someone played me the Akoustik and a recording of a real piano, I wouldn't be able to tell the difference. I'll have to find a way to get a copy...

I just listened to Emily's recording, and I'd say about the same thing for it. My head says there's a flatness of the tone that sounds artificial -- but then, I'm not convinced that my ears could discern the "artificial" tone from a "real piano" tone in a blind taste-test. This is certainly the best software piano simulation I've ever heard. It sounds as good -- perhaps better than -- the sounds generated by those $2000 digital pianos made by Roland and Yamaha.

Here is the Boesendorfer, my favorite of the pianos I've tried so far. These are just some chords from the verse of Datta. Nothing special. I was experimenting with the sustain, which I think sounds pretty nice. That is the aspect of most sampled PNOs that sounds weakest. www.savefile.com/files/5238079

Yeah, I like it. There's a harmonic richness in the Boesendorfer samples that's not as prevalent in the 16bit Steinway samples.
