This Sphere (1991):
www.zshare.net/audio/thisspheremusiconly-mp3.htmlThe second half of Carpetbagger is a sequence of songs that tells a story. I think the reason I never recorded the lyrics to these songs was because I was scared of it. My 4-track stopped working some time in 1993, so that was a convenient excuse. Additionally, I met Jenn in early 93, so my emotional need to record it decreased. After a while I became embarrassed about the lyrics—as I am now embarrassed by most of my juvenile songwriting—but I never really stopped thinking about them.
This is the song from the cycle that I’ve been most nervous about singing. “This Sphere” is the lynchpin of the sequence, and its subtext is a little too easy to decipher, however much I tried to hide it in Revelations 12:1-6.
If I get the chance, I’ll record these lyrics tomorrow. Otherwise, I’ll record them some time during the coming week.
This Sphere
Clothed in morning sunshine
The Moon under your feet
Stars surround your forehead
Even when your pain is great
You faced the great red Dragon
Before you came to me
In the Wilderness of Heaven
Where the stars fell down like rain
Memories of Grace before The Fall
Without your love I’m a prisoner in this sphere
Within your love there’s no escape from our despair
Maybe Heaven’s leader
Maybe too dear for sin
God kept the Sacred Bundle
And cast us out to ruin.
We were spared the Dragon
Maybe touched by God
But days fall down from Heaven
When once we walked in stars
Memories of Grace before The Fall
Without your love I’m a prisoner in this sphere
Within your love there’s no escape from our despair
And Mary speaks of things before The Fall
Without your love I’m a prisoner in this sphere
Within your love there’s no escape from our despair
[Mary’s lost in poppies red and green
Growing from the cover of a magazine…]
