I finally got it to work... and me likey! The beginning and the end would be good for Winter. Remember... I don't need to use it for the whole thing, just for parts, if I use music at all. What I don't like about the middle part, besides the presence of lyrics (easily removed) is the "electronic" nature of it.
Now remember, when I say "I don't like," I only mean for the movie, not in general!!

Very cool then! As strange as it may sound, the first part, the droning string sound was made--originally anyway--on my tele.
Okay, I do have a cracked version of Tracktion. I need to get you one, too. But you work on a Mac, alas. I'll see what I can do. My idea is to send you a CD with lots of things that you might use. You'll have all the parts of the song and can move them around to fit your film. I was really sorry you had to master from an mp3 last time. It was just the end of the semester, and I got busy. So, I'll keep working on this one, record some more with the guitar.
While I am waiting for Justin to do his bits I might even take another stab at the Spring song...or maybe I'll read some of your new posts on the board 8^)

I better post my wacky guitar tuning on the Winter song because I am destined to lose the little scrap of paper I wrote it on: From low to high: D#, A, C#, C#, G#, E

How can I post a song to the briefcase, Mr. McBride?

Oh, go to www.yahoo.com and login as "indigenet." The password is that language that Justin made at OSSM--I am PMing it to you now. Once logged in just click on the briefcase and there will be a screen telling you how much space is left. If there isn't enough for your song feel free to delete any of my songs which are taking up all our space. (Delete the one you think sucks the most.) I guess that is all. Let me know if you have any problems. Jeff PS Yahoo won't let you upload any file larger than 5MB. PPS I love your new avatar. "Now I am become death, the destroyer of worlds." It's Oppenheimer from Fat Man and Little Boy, no? (The same actor that played the nebbish Barclay on Star Trek and precursor of McGyver H.M. Murdoch on the A-Team!)

Well Chris,
After I did the draft of the Winter song on Friday, I spent the rest of the weekend trying to write another something for Spring. I recorded lots of stuff into the wee hours on Saturday even. But it's all shit. I will keep trying...

Chris,
I am sick today, so I am staying home from school (he he). Anyway, I have been working with this random idea I had for the Spring song. It sounds pretty good. Jenn has left the house for a few minutes, so I have my monitors on and everything. I have eight bars going in a loop just to check instrumentation. It is at 122bpm so it is definitely dancable. The problem is that it sounds a little like a Portishead groove, which could be cool since you wanted a girl to sing with it anyway. My question is this: Is that kind of feel definitely out? Sort of a mysterious mood? If I can't do loss, regret, bittersweet, or romantic, can I do mysterious? You said you wanted a Weapon of Choice feel, but I think I am genetically incapable of writing a straightforward groove like that. I need a hole at the center of the donut. What do you think?
...Maybe I should add that the bass sounds a little like the bass on Madonna's Music.
Heck, I'll just export the groove and you can tell me whether or not to abandon it. Just a sec...

Hey guys, here’s the link: www.savefile.com/files/5449746 This one is fun—and short, just over a minute—but it is only a notion that I could later develop into a concept which might then become an idea…or something like that. Still, I really think you guys will get a least a mild chuckle out of it, and at but a single MB, the DL will be painless. Again, it ain’t what you want, Chris. But it was fun, and I learned how to do half a dozen new things in Tracktion while making it. (All in all, a nice way to take my mind off my illness while my internet connection was down—blasted cable hasn’t been working right for two weeks now. I just now got it working again for the first time since Saturday morning.) The idea here was not to produce a finished song. I just wanted to run the instrumentation and the feel of the groove by Chris to see what he thought. If you can’t use it, Chris, I am happy to abandon this sketch as it is. I think the instrumentation is pretty good. The groove works on the intro and outro. But I question its feel on the chorus. Although it is distinctive and something I’ve not heard before, sort of Danny Elfman meets Madonna, it is not very danceable. It is cool walkable, not so much a rump-shaker as a shoulder-bouncer. At this point the organ part is there just to give you a feel for the chords. It would take at least a day to write and practice an interesting organ solo, at least for me, as I am an eighth rate keyboard performer, at best. Jeff PS I should say that the guitar loop is something that I found, but I worked it over pretty good here. Still, if we used it, we would need to re-record it. I bet Justin could give us something even better. Luggage (Samples from the film “Joe versus the Volcano”) You travel the world You’re away from home All you have to depend on is yourself And your Luggage May you live to be a thousand years old, sir. It’s the central preoccupation of my life. May you live to be a thousand years old, sir. I’ll tell you one thing Wherever we go Whatever we do We’re gonna take this luggage with us

I couldn't get the savefile link to work for me. Maybe it works for you. If it doesn't, I've also uploaded the song to the yahoo briefcase.

Did you get to film Chris? I know that Luggage was not a great draft. But I didn't have anything to do, so I reworked it tonight. Actually, it was strange. I didn't think I had any idea for it at all, but I just started playing and it began to sound a whole lot better. The key was abandoning the bass and drums. I reworked the bassline and everything started to fall into place. Now, the bass needs to be rerecorded in the draft I did tonight, but at least the idea is here now. (The bass is too effected and the notes get lost.) You still may not like it. And even if you do, it may not be the kind of thing you are looking for for the film. Fine. And Fine. I'll just keep working... 'Her Zero Halliburton Case" www.savefile.com/files/7510325 Jeff

Also in the Yahoo briefcase. (BTW: I scrapped the Joe V The Volcano samples. They were just place holders anyway.)

Awesome! I love it!
I didn't get to film this weekend, unfortunately, because my Snow Girl was in Rhode Island and I didn't want to make her drive all the way up. Alas. Hopefully, it will snow again!

Have you guys written/found any beat-heavy rocking numbers for summer? It's that time...

Okay Chris,
I realize the summer is almost over, but I had my Big Beat idea last night as I was working on that essay for Tyler. I pulled over and jotted a sketch. I will try to clean it up and post it tonight.

Chris, I didn't have time to lay down the vocal tonight. Worse, I haven't even written a chorus yet. What is here is just the cleaned up idea of the groove on the verse. www.zshare.net/audio/dirtybomb-mp3.htmlThe words are still very silly, so expect them to change. The shiny wears off the dirty bomb idea quickly, so I very much doubt that I'll keep that as the title. But this is what I have right now: <({!dIRTy bOMb!})> Sitting there In her chosen form In the city square There’s a dirty bomb And she ticks away While you struggle on Nothing sweet to say To a dirty bomb? I wish I would have had time to record the vocal melody, as it does add something to the song...even if the lyric is silly. Anyway, I haven't invested much time in this, so if your can't use it or something that might develop from it, that's fine with me. Jeff
