Like I've said before, I have not been playing as long as most everyone else here, and I did take a few years off from playing, so my comments are going to be more opinion-based than rule/strategy-based. I will say again, too, that because I cut my first D&D tooth on 2nd Ad. it will always hold a special place in my heart and nothing can comapre to it.
I do want to express an opinion regarding the use of miniatures. The groups that I first played with all used extensive miniatures. One of the best DM's I've ever played with (and occasionally still do) has hundreds of them. Everything from characters and monsters to NPC's, stair cases, barrels, and plates & silverware. To me all of that just adds to the whole D&D experience. Granted, I do have an idea in my mind of what things looks like, but the minis somehow enhance it. And by drawing the dimensions of the room and placing the characters and monsters in it, the experience become more concrete (I am a very tactile person).
Now there is the argument that drawing and placing all the minis takes time away from the game. For some reason this has never bothered me. The groups I played with would use that time for our over-the-table talk. And the DM's were so skilled at slapping all that stuff down that it hardly took any time at all. So it just generally enhanced the gaming experience and made it all the more fun.

You know Tyler even when that works, they all die by our blood soaked hands. It just looks so funny as they cry out in total disbeilf as your shoving 18 to 24 inches of cold streel through their guts, as you smile and say "oh, I'm sorry you seem to be stuck on the end of my blade here let me help you off." as you put your boot to their chest and kick hard. You just got to love those skills when you use them to your advantage.
Live fast and hard, but always watch your back. "Ja'Gar SilverWolf"
